Flannery O'Connor's "Good Country People" In "Good Country People" by Flannery O'Connor, uses symbolism in the choice of names, almost to the point of being ironic and humorous. These names center around the personality and demeanor of the characters. Hulga, once known as Joy, simply changed her name because it was the ugliest she could think of. Mrs. Freeman's name is ironic because she is burdened by the land that she works, so is not really free. Mrs. Hopewell?s name is also ironic, because she trys to provide hope, but is in fact empty in her talk. Each one of these characters names, Hulga, Mrs. Freeman, and Mrs. Hopewell, show the symbolism used by Flannery O'Connor. Hulga, the daughter to Mrs. Hopewell, was actually named Joy at birth. Complete Case Study #1 Meat’s Impact Intro to Hospitality Management Professor: Warren Jahn November 18, 2012 From reading â€Å"Meats Impact†, it is important to note that eating less meat lowers heart disease, diabetes, and colorectal cancer. Also, by substituting eggs or fish for red meat and dairy one day of the week for one year would reduce greenhouse gas emissions. It states that people who eat more red meat than others have a 40% higher risk of dying of a heart attack, stroke, etc.For every kilogram of beef we eat, 27 kilograms of greenhouse gases are released into the environment (Meat’s Impact). This article points out specific things about eating red meat and how it impacts a person’s health. I do not believe that this article will persuade the restaurant industry to change because honestly, these are things that have to be decided by ourselves, no one can make the changes in our lives, only we can. It is hard to say that the restaurant industry would be to blame for me getting a heart attack because I decided to eat a lot of red meat in my life.They would be to blame if they forced me to order it or forced me to eat it, but it would be my decision and not theirs to eat and order red meat. This article is a good wake up call for those of us that do not feel as though eating red meat is a big deal to our health or the environment for that matter. It shows statistics of what happens when we make unhealthy choices and it explains how not only does it affect us (our bodies) but it affect everyone around us too, through the environment.It is a good read for everyone to know what they are putting into their bodies and for them to know the differences that they could make if they would not eat red meat. If for some reason it would impact the restaurant industry it would be by not allowing them to sell red meat at their establishment.This would ensure that no one will order red meat and eat it, making the right decision and helping themselves and the environment in the long run. For some reason, it seems like it would illegal or unconstitutional to make the restaurant industry not sell red meat but there are other places that sell insects and people eat there and that’s fine. In my opinion, this is all a matter of personal preference and whether or not you are or want to be on a healthy streak or just plain out be healthy altogether.No one can or should try to make anyone do anything they do not want to do because more than likely it will be unsuccessful because there is no cooperation from the person. The issues raised by CSPI are justified just because they try to educate the public on their health and a lot of people are not educated in this topic and allow themselves to be taken advantage of when out eating by not knowing what they are putting in their bodies.It makes sense that they would want to keep everyone safe and allow them the chance to make their own decisions based on what they learn from them. It’s good for an organization to keep their eye out for the public and help them realize when something is not good for their health/well being. Granted, it should not be taken to the extreme of trying to force the restaurant industry into doing what they do because not everyone wants to live the healthy lifestyle.It would make sense if people would want them to mind their own business because it probably puts a damper on the restaurant business because of it. It probably slows their business down because of the some investigations and or researching that CSPI might do or would want to do. Overall, I think that they have a good idea of how the public should perceive the restaurant industry but they should also keep in mind that they cannot force people to do what they want them to do.The restaurant industry should also keep in mind that they should have to be forthcoming with what they put on their menu, like seeing the amount of calories for each plate or seeing what the ingredients are for some dishes. One unsuspecting person might think that I’m very naive to make such an assertion. In fact, I’d argue that the other person was rather naive after reading The World is Flat by Thomas L. Friedman and The Reluctant Fundamentalist by Mohsid Hamid. In this essay, I will be explaining how I have come to conceive this notion. Now, what about the companies that do keep their businesses domestic? We, the United States, being a country where many ethnic groups and nationalities have come together, can still face stiff competition. We have immigrants wanting to live in the â€Å"greatest country in the world† so the reputation says. Companies can find people who will do the labor for less, just to have a job. Not only is there competition in laborers, but there’s competition in â€Å"white collar† jobs, as well. It’s all coming down to who has the best education, the ability, and the flexibility. For example, if the demand to relocate or travel is there and if one prospect won’t do it, the company or business will find a candidate who will. There are people in society today who know no boundaries and will do whatever it takes to climb the corporate ladder and if it means going to another country to obtain their desires or dreams, that’s exactly what they will do. This leads to a compelling point in the book, The Reluctant Fundamentalist in which the main character, Changez- a Pakistani, succeeded in earning a coveted job with a prestigious American company (Hamid, 5. This position was not necessarily sought upon because of a yearning to be an American, but rather as a vehicle to success and fortune. The drive for his success with this company was fueled by his desire to prove himself better than the American counterparts as opposed to the success of the prestigious company, itself. Rising High School Seniors Colleges and high schools have such odd terminology. As if the alphabet soup of academic acronyms wasnt enough, there are all the strange terms - bursar, for example, yield and Jan Term. So when your childs counselor refers to him as a rising senior, what on earth does that mean? Once upon a time, a kid was a junior until June of his junior year. When the bell rang on the last day of school, he became a senior - even if the start of the next academic year was still two months away. Now, hes called a rising senior. (Clearly, its only a matter of time before preschoolers are called rising kindergartners!) The term is primarily used at college prep high schools in the United States and when colleges discuss admissions season, as in, We offer overnight visits to rising seniors. Colleges rarely use the term to discuss their students, and in fact, the freshman/sophomore/junior/senior terminology is increasingly giving way to alternative descriptions based on how long a student has attended, as in the first year, second year and so on. How Rising Seniors Should Spend Their Time Your rising senior is in the home stretch of high school, and over the summer he likely wants to hang out with friends, sleep, swim, play video games, take a road trip or lounge around doing nothing. Once hes gotten that out of his system, its important to devote two or three hours a week to start in on college applications. He may pester you that this is his time off, but students who begin the admissions process during summer before their senior year are most successful. Here are four things to put on the to-do list: Create a college list: Determining where to apply is the most important action to take over the summer. Figure out where youre going to get your information to decide which college is the best fit for your child. Also, start looking into the financial aid that you might qualify for. Contact those colleges: Presenters at a National Association for College Admission Counseling convention stated that colleges admissions officers are turning down some otherwise qualified students for no other reason than the fact that the students had no contact with them before submitting their applications. Your rising senior needs to show â€Å"demonstrated interest† - a term used by colleges to note the frequency and quality of contact students have with admissions offices which indicated the likelihood of a student to enroll if offered admission. However, adaptation to a nocturnal life has given the red fox some feline traits, as well. Males (called dogs) and females (called vixens) exhibit slight sexual dimorphism. Vixens are slightly smaller than dogs, with smaller skulls and larger canine teeth. On average, a male measures 54 to 78 inches and weighs 10 to 12 pounds, while a female ranges from 56 to 74 inches in length and weighs 9 to 10 pounds. The red fox has an elongated body and a tail that is over half its body length. The fox has pointed ears, long canine teeth, and eyes with vertical slits and a nictitating membrane (like a cat). Habitat and Distribution The red fox ranges across the Northern Hemisphere into Central America, North Africa, and Asia. It does not live in Iceland, in some deserts, or in the extreme polar regions of the Arctic and Siberia. The red fox was introduced to Australia in the 1830s. The species is banned from New Zealand under the Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act of 1996. Where the soil permits, foxes dig burrows, where they live and bear their young. Their eyes have a tapetum lucidum to aid with vision in dim light, plus they have an acute sense of hearing. The red fox pounces on prey from above, using its tail as a rudder. The tail, also known as a brush, covers the fox and helps it stay warm in cold weather. Reproduction and Offspring For most of the year, red foxes are solitary and live in the open. However, in the winter, they court, mate, and seek dens. Vixens reach sexual maturity as early as 9 or 10 months, so they may bear a litter at one year of age. Males mature later. After mating, the gestation period lasts approximately 52 days. The vixen (female fox) gives birth to around four to six kits, though the number of young can be as high as 13. The fluffy brown or gray kits are born blind, deaf, and without teeth. At birth, they only weigh 2 to 4 ounces with 5 to 6 inch bodies and 3 inch tails. Newborn kits cannot regulate their temperature, so their mother remains with them while the male fox or another vixen brings food. The kits are born with blue eyes that change to amber after about two weeks. Kits start to leave the den around 3 to 4 weeks of age and are weaned at 6 to 7 weeks. Their coat color begins changing at 3 weeks of age, with guard hairs appearing after 2 months. While red foxes may live 15 years in captivity, they usually survive 3 to 5 years in the wild. The reader feels that the phrase should not be used to describe a noun: This usage looks incorrect to me. M-W describes [in absentia] only as an adverb. Regardless of what it says in the dictionary, in absentia is often used as a qualifier in academic and legal contexts: Fallows intended his in  absentia  program as a vehicle for reaching adults, not as  an option for the conventional, youthful collegiate audience. All degree requirements must be completed or in progress before the student can begin the in absentia graduation process. The in absentia registration fee is $25. If a defendant takes off during the pretrial phase, however, he may be able to elude an  in absentia conviction.
